Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom Movie Development
During the making of Aquaman (2018), star Jason Momoa developed a story pitch for a sequel, which he gave to Warner Bros. Entertainment chairman Toby Emmerich and producer Peter Safran. In October 2018, ahead of the film’s release, Momoa stated that he would be more involved in the development of a possible sequel and filming is expected to begin in 2019. Director James Wan stated that there are many stories that could come out of Aquaman, with the film that seven underwater kingdoms that had yet to be fully explored.By early December, Emmerich was confident enough in box office projections that the film would initiate discussions on a sequel, and by the end of January, when Aquaman was set to become the highest-grossing film based on a DC Comics character, Warner Bros. Were in talks with Wan to oversee the development and writing of a sequel with the potential to return as director. Geoff Boucher of Deadline Hollywood noted that Van was very protective of the sequels to his previous films Insidious (2010) and The Conjuring (2013), and was “deeply invested” in Aquaman’s worldbuilding, which he compared to the mid- was from the earth. Star Wars Galaxy, and the Wizarding World.
Warner Bros. hired Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald in early February 2019 to write the script for an Aquaman spin-off film called The Trench, based on one of the kingdoms introduced in the first film. The film was expected to have a small budget and would not feature Aquaman as the main cast, with Van and Safran producing. Borys Kitt of The Hollywood Reporter then reported that the studio, Wan, and Momoa had not yet had serious discussions about a direct sequel to Aquaman, as they wanted a “Breater” at first, but several days later they reported. That sequel was under active development, with co-writer of the first film, and frequent Van collaborator, David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick signing on to write the screenplay. Wan and Safran were set to produce the sequel, although it was still unclear whether Wan would direct it. In late February, Warner Bros. scheduled Aquaman 2 for release on December 16, 2022.In March, Safran explained that he and Wan did not want to rush into a sequel, and Warner Bros. had backed it, which is why the film’s release was scheduled for four years after the first film. He said he was approaching the Aquaman franchise similar to Conjuring Universe, exploring spin-offs such as The Trench for “mothership” films starring Aquaman, as well as stories about underwater kingdoms. Safran said that Van knew the “architecture, arsenal, army, form, feel, general vibe” of each of the seven kingdoms and wanted to explore them all in future projects.
In July 2019, Van was set to direct the film Malignant (2021) before starting work on Aquaman 2. Patrick Wilson said in November that he had discussed plans for a sequel with Van and indicated that he would reprise his role as Orm Marius/Ocean Master from the first film.A month later, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II confirmed that he was returning as David Kane/Black Manta, and wanted to clarify the character’s personality and journey. Johnson-McGoldrick stated in March 2020 that the sequel would not be based on a specific comic book, but was drawing inspiration from the Aquaman stories from the Silver Age of Comic Books that featured Black Manta as the villain. Wan was confirmed to direct the sequel at a virtual DC Fandome event in August, when he said it would be more serious than the first film and feature themes that were more relevant to the real world. He said it would include more world building and exploration of underwater kingdoms, and would feature some horror elements similar to the trench sequence in the first film. Being able to expand on the worldbuilding of the first film was a major reason Wan chose to direct the sequel, along with a Johnson-McGoldrick script, which Wan felt “brings all these characters back”. Bringing in a really cool story, and then growing them in a big way, and taking them to the next level or the next chapter in their lives.”
Amber Heard shrugged off rumors in November that she would not reprise her role as Mira from the first film following allegations of domestic abuse against her by ex-husband Johnny Depp. That month, a petition to remove Heard from the franchise received over 1.5 million signatures, and Warner Bros. was followed by.’ Depp was dropped from the third Fantastic Beasts film after The Sun’s allegations of abuse were “substantially true”. He never considered making a sequel without him. He said he would not respond to “pure fan pressure” from the petition and other social media conversations.
