Monsters of Man Movie Story: In Man of the Man, three engineers camped in the Golden Triangle area near Thailand to begin testing four high-tech robot soldiers in hopes of securing a high-paying military contract. The operation is performed by a devious CIA agent named “Major” (Neil McDonough). Unfortunately, after the robot is deployed, the team learns that a group of six doctors are on fire on a humanitarian mission. There is also an X-Navy seal mason (Brett Tutor), who lives off the grid. The major orders are that all witnesses should be thrown out, but Mason and the Doctor are ready to fight for their lives.
What did the parents know: Parents need to know that Monsters of Man is a graphically violent film set for loose robots in the woods as a trial run for a possible military contract. It is long, violent, and not specifically for non-white-male characters, but the robots are cool, and have interesting themes about accountability and life. Many characters are killed, some in shocking, gruesome ways. Expect heavy gun and shooting, clear blood and gore, explosions, rolling a robot over someone’s head, stabbing and killing a man, and more. Death has meaning here, however: a child cries over its dead parents, and other characters mourn the fallen. The language is also very strong with continued use of “f – k,” “s – t,” and more. There is mild flirting and brief kisses, and a character smokes cigarettes.
It has its share of flaws, but this violent killer robot film somehow manages to use its extensive time to find interesting gray areas between its situations and characters. Self-financed and written, directed, produced, and shot by former advertising implementation Mark Touya,
Monsters of Man is a combination of impressive ambition and absurdist B film content. On the downside, teams of qualified, culturally diverse doctors are the least interesting characters, and the film makes the cliché – and problematic – the mistake of killing non-white people first. (Women and children are also killed.)
Action sequences are often staggering, and the violence is brutal and shocking, but at least death means something here. Also, some shadier characters are quite fun. The familiar, icy-quiet McDonough added a few CIAs as the evil CIA agent, answering the phone with a simple “go”. “And the main protagonist Mason actually has a human side: he’s far more attractive than many of the more employable action stars of today. The film’s effects are impressive, with the robots easily looking metallic and three-dimensional. And Tia Jung The setting is used to fine effect,
whether it is trying to climb vines in a rocky valley or hiding in an ancient temple. Finally, the demons are about weapons and violence, good and bad, death and life. I leave it complicated with questions.
